Hindsiothrips Stannard View in CoL

This genus was described by Stannard (1958) for the North American species, Hindsiana pullata Hood , and currently includes two species from North America ( pullatus and robustisetis) ( Mound & Marullo 1996) and two from Europe ( bonessi and navarrensis ) ( Goldarazena & Mound 1998). In addition, Priesner (1939) described another species, H. oettingeni (Priesner) , from a single specimen, and Priesner (1964) provided a key to distinguish this species from H. bonessi (Titschack) . However, the single winged specimen on which oettingeni is based is probably the same species as bonessi that is known only from apterae ( Schliephake & Klimt 1979). A fifth species of Hindsiothrips is described here from Iran. The species in this genus share the following character states: head longer than wide, eyes small, maxillary stylets less than one third of head width apart medially, retracted to compound eyes, maxillary bridge not developed. Antennae 8-segmented, III with one or two sensoria, IV with three sensoria ( Figs 2, 3 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ), pronotal epimeral sutures complete or incomplete, fore tarsi with a small curved tooth at inner apical margin ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 16 – 18 ), pelta rounded in Palearctic species (including the new species) (Fig. 22), rectangular to trapezoidal in North American species.
