Usually glandular-pubescent. Siliqua pubescent. Almost throughout the range o f the species.

Variable and often divided into a number of subsidiary taxa. Var. spectabilis (Jordan) with the petals 25-40 x 5-9 mm, purple, is often confused with 3. It generally occurs only in the southern half of the range of subsp. (a).
