Herrera martiniquensis ( Davis, 1934) View in CoL new combination
Carineta martiniquensis Davis 1934: 54 View in CoL ( Martinique, French West Indies).
Remarks. This species is also reassigned to the genus Herrera to become Herrera mariniquensis ( Davis, 1934) n. comb. based on the head being wider than the mesonotum and wider than the lateral pronotum, and the pronotum having approximate parallel sides. Davis (1934) considered placing the species in Herrera but assigned the species to Carineta based on the wing width. This character has been determined to be more variable in the two genera with the addition of more species and is no longer a definitive character to separate species in the two genera. The two species from Martinique previously assigned to Carineta share this characteristic and are retained in the same genus with the reassignment to Herrera mariniquensis ( Davis, 1934) n. comb.
Diagnosis. This is the intermediately sized of the three Martinique species of Herrera with body lengths less than 19 mm and fore wing length less than 23 mm. It can also be distinguished by the reduced piceous and castaneous markings on the pronotum and mesothorax compared to the Herrera acclivis n. comb. and Herrera castaneanigricula n. sp. found on Martinique. The reduced markings also distinguish this species from Herrera grammosticta and Herrera nigropercula . Piceous opercula and the luteous regions on the anterior and posterior abdomen also quickly separate Herrera nigropercula .
Distribution. The species is known only from Martinique ( Davis 1934; Sanborn 2017b).
