Eremurus chloranthus Popov in Botschantzev (1959: 631). Eremurus chloranthus Popov in Popov &
Androsov (1936: 25, 1937: 25), nom. inval. (Art. 36.1 ICBN). Henningia chlorantha (Popov)
Khokhriakov (1965: 79), nom. inval. (Art. 33.4 ICBN).
The name of Eremurus chloranthus was incorrectly assessed as invalidly published by Czerepanov (1995). Albeit Popov & Androsov (1936, 1937) provided no Latin description or diagnosis, the name was validly published later by Botschantzev (1959) who translated the original Russian diagnosis into Latin and provided a full and direct reference to the single gathering cited in Vvedensky (1941), although that gathering had not been termed type (Art. 37.3 ICBN, second clause). The conditions of valid publication were therefore obtained in 1959, and the name is still to be attributed to Popov (Art. 46.2 ICBN) because the name was ascribed to him and the validating diagnosis (the language notwithstanding) also explicitly belonged to him.
By contrast, the combination Henningia chlorantha was not validly published by Khokhriakov (1965) who failed to provide a reference to the actual place of valid publication but referred to Popov & Androsov (1937) instead.
Euphorbia prorepens Popov View in CoL in Popov & Androsov (1936: 32, 1937: 31), nom. illeg. superfl.
= Euphorbia kanaorica Boissier (1862: 154) View in CoL .
Popov published this name with the explicit inclusion of the earlier and legitimate Tithymalus polytimeticus Prokhanov (1933: 142) , which epithet was available in Euphorbia View in CoL and had to be adopted instead of description of a new species ( Botschantzev 1959). In spite of its illegitimacy, the superfluous name Euphorbia prorepens View in CoL is to be typified separately from T. polytimeticus because Popov indicated a different type (Art. 7.5 ICBN).
Eurotia ceratoides var. pungens Popov View in CoL in Popov & Androsov (1936: 26, 1937: 26). Eurotia pungens (Popov)
Pazij (1953: 231). Krascheninnikovia pungens (Popov) Czerepanov (1995: 186) View in CoL .
= Krascheninnikovia ceratoides ( Linnaeus 1753: 979) Gueldenstaedt (1772: 555) View in CoL .
Czerepanov (1995) published his new transfer with a full and direct reference to Popov & Androsov (1937) that is not the place of valid publication of the basionym. The new combination is validly published under Art. 33.7(a) ICBN. Podlech (1975) attempted publishing the same combination but referred to Pazij (1953) instead of the basionym; as Pazij cited the basionym and Podlech provided no validating description and type citation of his own, his new transfer is not validly published.
Linaria ambigua Popov View in CoL in Popov & Androsov (1936: 35, 1937: 35), nom. inval. (Art. 36.1 ICBN).
= Linaria popovii Kuprian. View in CoL in Nevsky (1937: 319).
Plantago paludosa Popov View in CoL in Popov & Androsov (1936: 35), nom. illeg., non Turcz. ex Ledebour (1849: 478). Plantago sogdiana Popov View in CoL in Popov & Androsov (1937: 35).
= Plantago gentianoides Sibthorp & Smith (1806: 101) View in CoL .
Plantago sogdiana View in CoL was validly published with the same description as of P. paludosa View in CoL , reprinted verbatim from Popov & Androsov (1936) except for the correction of numerous typographical errors. No reference was provided to the intended replaced name ( Botschantzev 1959).
Scutellaria intermedia var. glabriuscula Popov in Popov & Androsov (1936: 34, 1937: 33), nom. inval. (Art. 36.1 ICBN).
= Scutellaria glabrata Vved. in Juzepczuk (1954: 124). Scutellaria multicaulis var. patens Regel (1880: 365) . Vvedensky in Juzepczuk (1954) intended to base his new species name on the invalidly published varietal name of Popov, as evident from his statement “described from the Guralash Nature Reserve”. Fortunately, at the same time he cited a validly published varietal name by Regel (1880) that serves as the actual type-bringing replaced synonym. Vvedensky’s statement “Described from the Guralash Nature Reserve. Type in Tashkent” ( Juzepczuk 1954) is ineffective, because Art. 7.3 ICBN applies and therefore the original material of S. glabrata comes from the vicinity of Dashti-Kozi Village ( Tajikistan) on the southern side of Turkestan Range.
