FAMILY GYMNOPHTHALMIDAE Fitzinger 1826 , 11
(1 genus, 1 species). Savage (2002), Solís et al. (2014), and many others have credited MacLean (1974 [p. 199]) (Savage also misspelled MacLean) for this family name. MacLean proposed this name in its current concept, but the name was previously occupied by Fitzinger (as the “Familiae” Gymnophthalmoidea).
Gymnophthalmus Merrem 1820 , 74 (1 species)
Gymnophthalmus speciosus (Hallowell 1861, 484). This nominal form represents a complex of several species. Numerous authors have commented on this issue, with apparently the most recent being Ugueto et al. (2013, although they gave the incorrect type locality of this nominal form).
