Fiorinia Targioni-Tozzetti, 1868: 735 . Type Species: Fiorinia pellucida Targioni- Tozzetti, by monotypy.
Generic diagnosis. Adult female scale or test. Tawny, oblong; pupilarial within second exuviate; first exuviate apical. Male scale or test white, elongate, exuviate apical.
Adult female. Body elongate, segments in prepygidial region inconspicuous. Derm more or less sclerotized on pygidium. Cephalothorax. Antennae each with 1 seta. Interantennal process present between antennae in some species. Anterior spiracles with trilocular pores, posterior spiracles without trilocular pores. Pygidium. L1 well developed, zygotic, with a pair of marginal setae between them; L2 developed in some species but degenerate in others; L3 absent or represented by a protuberance. Marginal gland spines present or absent on pygidium; when present, only occurring on seventh and eight abdominal segments; prepygidial gland spines present or absent; if present, generally, smaller than on pygidium. Gland tubercles present or absent, if present, occurring cephalothorax and submarinallly of abdominal segments I-III. Ducts. Dorsal macroducts 2-barred, few, those present on submedial and submarginal regions generally smaller than in marginal region. Ventral microducts scattered. Anal opening situated on base of pygidium. Perivulvar pores quinquelocular, in 5 groups.
Remarks. This genus superficially resembles Thysanofiorinia Balachowsky, 1954 , but differs in the following combination of characters: 1) base of median lobes (L1) zygotic in Fiorinia , but non-zygotic in Thysanofiorinia ; 2) marginal gland spines present between L 1 in Fiorinia , but absent in Thysanofiorinia ; and 3) perivulvar pores in five groups in Fiorinia , but absent in Thysanofiorinia .
In addition, Fiorinia is close to Pseudaulacaspis in body shape and the shape of lobes, but can distinguished by: 1) gland spine on pygidium well-developed in Pseudaulacaspis , but undeveloped or degenerate in some species in Fiorinia ; 2) submedial and submarginal macroducts well developed on pygidium in Pseudaulacaspis , but undeveloped, degenerate or absent in Fiorinia ; 3) base of median lobes (L1) non-zygotic in Pseudaulacaspis , but zygotic in Fiorinia . In other words, Fiorinia is close to Pseudaulacaspis but has more degenerate marginal gland spines and dorsal macroducts. However, in addition, Fiorinia is pupillarial whereas Pseudaulacaspis is not.
