Exochomoscirtes ruforotundus ( Watts, 2004) comb. nov.
Scirtes ruforotundus Watts, 2004: 151
( Fig. 5K View FIGURE 5 , 12N–O View FIGURE 12 , 36 View FIGURE 36 , 37 View FIGURE 37 )
Studied material. Male ( EUM): “ Mt. Batukau / Tabanan, C. Bali / Indonesia / 27.V.2005 / H. Takizawa ” [printed label]. Male ( EUM): “ Lake Tamblingan / Buleleng, Bali Is. / Indonesia / 25.V.2005 / H. Takizawa ” [printed label]. 2 Males ( DBET): “ Qld Fitzroy Island / 11/9/08 CHS Watts” [printed label] .
Diagnosis. Similar to E. retusus (CHAMPION) , but apices of parameroids are not emarginate. See remarks below.
Distribution. Australia (north Queensland, Northern Territory), north coast of New Guinea ( Watts 2004), Bali (new record).
Biology. Larvae live in dense concentrations in water-filled tree holes (Watts pers. com.).
Remarks. It can be noted in addition to the original description, that the dorsal surface has extremely variable colour: from all dark testaceous to elytra dark testaceous (redish black) with extensive yellowish area on disc. Photographs of male genitalia supplementing drawings in the original description are presented on Figs. 36–37 View FIGURE 36 View FIGURE 37 . The only feature distinguishing E. ruforotundus from E. retusus is a small detail in the morphology of the penis. It seems highly plausible that both taxa are conspecific and belong to a species which is widely distributed in North Australia, New Guinea and surrounding islands.
