Eugnamptus pusillus Hamilton & Novinger , new species
( Figs. 5 View FIGURES 1 – 6 , 17 View FIGURE 17 )
Type designation. Holotype male with the following label data: Costa Rica, Heredia Pr.: La Selva Biol. Sta., 3 km S Pto. Viejo, 10°26'N 84°01'W, 15 Abril 1993, bosque secundario, M/02/065, INBIOCR1002260813. Allotype female labeled same as holotype except 1 Julio 1993, M/05/140, INBIOCR1002260814.
Size range. Male: 3.1 x 1.1 mm to 3.5 x 1.2 mm; Female: 3.4 x 1.2 mm to 3.6 x 1.3 mm.
Description. Male: Head as long as wide, with very small widely spaced punctures, strongly constricted at base; frons slightly wider than width of rostral base; gena slightly longer than ½ diameter of eye; eyes relatively small, longitudinal diameter distinctly shorter than length of rostrum. Rostrum shorter than head, widened beyond antennal insertions, width at apex slightly wider than frons. Antennae inserted at middle of rostrum, club distinctly longer than funicle; segment 1 of funicle ovoglobose, slightly shorter than scape; segment 2 longer, more slender and weakly clavate; segment 3–5 similar to segment 2 but shorter; segments 6 and 7 more ovoglobose, pale; basal and middle segments of club subequal in length; terminal segment of club about ½ as long as basal or middle segment. Pronotum longer than wide, narrowed anteriorly, with small widely spaced punctures. Elytra longer than wide, widest at apical third; in lateral view strongly depressed behind scutellum; striae distinct throughout, more weakly impressed distally; intervals about as wide as striae, weakly convex; row of semierect setae associated with strial interspaces; row of widely spaced erect setae along intervals; next to last strial row joins last strial row at or near middle of elytra. Female: Same as male except rostrum longer than head; antennae inserted near basal 1/3 of rostrum; antennal club only slightly longer than funicle; frons distinctly wider than width of rostral base.
Color. Head, pronotum, elytra and ventral surface of thorax shiny reddish brown; legs and abdominal ventrites paler; basal segment of antennal club and last two funicle segments pale yellowish ( Fig. 17 View FIGURE 17 d); middle and terminal club segments darker; remaining antennal segments reddish brown.
Comments. The type series consists of 16 specimens. The small size, shiny reddishbrown color, mostly pale legs and the yellowish basal segment of the antennal club easily identify E. pusillus ( Fig.17 View FIGURE 17 ). The pedon is narrowed in the apical 1/3 into a parallel sided distal portion with a broadly rounded medially denticulate apex ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1 – 6 b). The base of the TA is composed of two elongate parallel sided basal struts and the apex is slightly enlarged, rounded, centrally clear and with two closely united forward projecting spinelike processes. This species was collected fogging G. meiantha , H. didymanthera and P. m a c roloba.
Name derivation. The specific name refers to the small size of this species.
