18. Eugenia chiquitensis O. Berg var. pseudoverticillata (S. Moore) Mazine , comb. nov., stat. nov. Basionym: Eugenia pseudoverticillata S. Moore (1895: 357) . Eugenia orbignyana O. Berg (1857: 314) var. pseudoverticillata (S. Moore) Mazine (2008: 2) .

Type:— BRAZIL, Mato Grosso, Santa Cruz, S. Moore 607 (holotype BM!, isotypes K!, NY!).

Notes:—We were erroneously naming these shrubs with generally delicate racemes and tiny flower buds from cerrados of Central region of Brazil and Bolivia as Eugenia orbignyana O. Berg (1857: 314) , considering that E. chiquitensis had been published in 1858, in Flora Brasiliensis (1858: 519). However, E. chiquitensis is an earlier name, published in 1856, and it is the correct name for this species. As we recognize two varieties in this entity, a new name for var. pseudoverticillata under E. chiquitensis is needed.

We opted to keep the collection S. Moore 607 as a distinct variety once it has very evident trichomes at the hypanthium, which has not been found in any other sheet of Eugenia chiquitensis . Also, the bracteoles have rounded apex (versus acute in var. chiquitensis ). It is known only by the type-collection.

Mazine & Souza (2008) cited that the name Eugenia pseudoverticillata S. Moore (published in 1895) was illegitimate, being a later homonym of Eugenia pseudoverticillata Kiaerskou [published in 1893, a synonym of E. verticillata (Vellozo, 1829: 215) Angely (1970: 560) ]. Assuming Eugenia pseudoverticillata S. Moore corresponded to a variety of Eugenia orbignyana O. Berg , according to McNeill et al. (2012, art. 49.1), they mentioned it should be treated as E. orbignyana O. Berg var. pseudoverticillata Mazine , not as Eugenia orbignyana O. Berg var. pseudoverticillata (S. Moore) Mazine. However , the name published by Kiaerskou (1893) is Eugenia pseudoverticilliflora , not E. pseudoverticillata . Therefore, Eugenia pseudoverticillata S. Moore is not illegimate and the correct citation of the variety’s name is Eugenia chiquitensis O. Berg var. pseudoverticillata (S.Moore) Mazine.
