( Figs. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 24. 1 and 55 View FIGURES 55 – 65. 55 )
Eucyane variabilis f. flavofasciata Zerny, 1928: 3. Lectotype hereby designated, male: COLOMBIA, Bella Vista, August 1927; with three labels: printed label “W. Columbien, Bella Vista, August 1927 ”, handwritten label “Eucyane variabilis Zerny ♂ f. flavofasciata Zerny type ”, and another label “ AS. 2280 a, b Euc. variabilis f. flavofasciata Zy H. De Toulgoët prép” [examined]. New synonym of Hypocrita variabilis variabilis .
Current combination. Junior subjective synonym of Hypocrita variabilis variabilis ( Zerny, 1928) .
Condition of the type. Wings slightly rubbed; apex of left forewing and small piece of hindwing damaged. Tip of right antenna broken.
Remarks. The description of E. variabilis comprised the description of three subspecies: E. variabilis variabilis , E. variabilis flavofasciata , and E. variabilis roseofasciata , the last two described as “forms” (and therefore to be treated as subspecies, according to ICZN, article 45.6.4). Zerny (1928) mentioned six males, two of each. Still according to Zerny, only two of those specimens were deposited at the NHMW. Two were indeed found, one of them consistent with the description of E. variabilis variabilis , and the other consistent with E. variabilis flavofasciata (see below). Zerny gave no hint about where the other specimens might be. However, he did mention later ( Zerny, 1931b) that the specimens from Colombia came from Fassl. According to Horn & Kahle (1935 –1937), part of Fassl’s material from Colombia went to the Tring Museum (currently housed at the BMNH), and another part was sold. No potential type specimen of either of the subspecies of E. variabilis was found at the BMNH, but two specimens were found at the ZMHB, with labels identical to those of the NHMW’s type specimens. They are part of the type series of E. variabilis roseofasciata and of E. variabilis variabilis , as discussed below. The second type specimen of E. variabilis flavofasciata remains to be discovered.
The lectotype of Eucyane variabilis flavofasciata has been dissected, and the third label refers to the slide bearing the genitalia ( Fig. 48 View FIGURES 25 – 48. 25 ). This name is here synonymized under Hypocrita variabilis variabilis because there is no reason to assume that specimens from the same locality represent different subspecies based solely on the wing pattern.
