Description: Body ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 6 ) shiny, lighter or darker reddish-brown, body length 2.10–2.20 mm, body width 0.80–0.85 mm; with long, golden pubescence, sparse on elytra, erect on sides of pronotum and posterior part of head. Head slightly wider than long, tempora evenly convergent posteriorly; eyes protuberant; supra-antennal tubercles weakly protuberant. Antennae ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1 – 6 ) 1.20–1.30 mm long; antennomeres III–VI subequal, antennomere VII transverse, 1.30 time as wide as long, slightly wider than VI; antennomere VIII about 1.70 times as long as wide, about 3 times as long as VII and 1.30 times as long as IX; X subquadrate; terminal antennomere 1.80 time as long as wide and about twice as long as X. Pronotum 1.15–1.25 as long as wide. Elytra 1.50–1.55 times as long as wide, sutural striae reaching basal fourth of elytral length. Aedeagus 0.47 mm in length, as in Fig. 6 View FIGURES 1 – 6 .

Distribution: Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Ukraine (Davis, 2004).

Differential diagnosis: Euconnus motschulskii differs from other species of the denticornis group by large body, 2.10–2.20 mm long, antennomere VII transverse, 1.30 times as long as wide, antennomere VIII about 1.70 times as long as wide, subquadrate antennomere X. Euconnus motschulskii is similar to E. winneguthi , both are largest species of the subgenus within the studied area. Euconnus motschulskii differs from E. winneguthi in different structure of antennomeres VII–XI and aedeagus.

Note I: The original description of Scydmaenus major by Motschulsky (1851) is too general and simple to allow recognizing this species. He is just comparing it on the general level with E. motschulskii and Stenichnus godarti Latreille, 1806 . Description is most probably based on female because the modification of antennal club is not mentioned, no dimessions are given either. So, the identification of the species is not possible. The finding of this species has never been mentioned since its description although Slovenia is entomologically very well explored country. Species has not been mentioned in further taxonomical studies from the area (Reitter, 1882; Karaman, 1974; Franz, 1971b). All these facts lead us to the conclusion that this species is identical with E. motschulskii .

Note II: Euconnus motschulskii is a common species in mountainous regions of the Balkan Peninsula and eastern part of the Alps. The occurrence in Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary and Poland is highly doubtfull and must be confirmed by new records.
