Euconnus (Borneoconnus) sabahanus Franz

( Figs 3–4, 7 View FIGURES 1–7 , 20–23 View FIGURES 12–23 )

Euconnus (Borneoconnus) sabahanus Franz, 1992: 902 , figs 49–50.

Type material studied. Holotype [E MALAYSIA]: ♂: three labels ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 1–7 ): “ SABAH / Crocker Ra. / 1550-1650 m, 16.V.1987 / Burckhardt—Löbl” with “27a” on the reverse side [white, printed; reverse handwritten], “ E. (Bor- neoconnus) / sabahanus n.sp. / det. H. Franz ” [white, handwritten and printed], “ Holotypus ” [red, handwritten] ( MHNG) . Paratypes: ♂, same data as for holotypes, except for a yellow “ PARATYPUS ” label ( MHNG) ; 1 ♂, sama data ( NHMW) . Additionally 1 ♂ and 2 ♀♀ were studied ( NHMW) with the same collecting data, but lacking identification labels; they presumably are paratypes.

Revised diagnosis. BL of male 1.20–1.30 mm; antennomere VIII in male slightly transverse, IX less than twice as broad as long and less than twice as broad as antennomere XI, convex dorsally and ventrally; pronotum broadest at base, strongly narrowing anterad; ventral apical plate of aedeagus subtrapezoidal with weakly rounded sides, its apex forming gradually tapered, small subtriangular lobe with its apical portion directed laterad.

Redescription. Body of male ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1–7 ) and female ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1–7 ) moderately slender and moderately convex, BL 1.20–1.30 mm; pigmentation uniformly dark brown; vestiture slightly lighter than cuticle.

Head elongate rhomboidal, broadest at eyes, HL 0.25–0.28 mm, HW 0.20–0.23 mm; vertex and frons confluent, convex; supraantennal tubercles indistinct; eyes small, weakly convex; tempora in dorsal view about 3 × as long as eyes. Punctures on vertex and frons small and inconspicuous; setae short, moderately dense, suberect; tempora and vertex with long and dense bristles. Antennae short, AnL 50 mm; antennomeres I–II each strongly elongate, III–VIII each slightly transverse, IX modified, strongly transverse, asymmetrical, distinctly, but not strongly projecting laterad, convex dorsally and ventrally, entirely setose, X slightly modified, distinctly transverse, asymmetrical, with broad basal mesal projection, entirely setose; XI distinctly narrower and longer than X, nearly symmetrical, indistinctly elongate, with subconical apex.

Pronotum in dorsal view subtrapezoidal, broadest at base and strongly narrowing anteriorly; PL 0.30 mm, PW 0.25–0.26 mm; anterior margin nearly straight, sides nearly straight, posterior corners obtuse-angled; posterior margin straight at middle and bent anterad at each side in front of humerus; pronotal base with two pairs of small and shallow pits (outer pits barely discernible), area between median pits forming slightly elevated, diffuse longitudinal carina; sublateral carinae indistinct under light microscope. Punctures on pronotal disc fine, inconspicuous; setae short, moderately dense, suberect, sides of pronotum with dense, long bristles.

Elytra together suboval and slightly flattened, broadest distinctly in front of middle, EL 0.65–0.73 mm, EW 0.48–0.50 mm, EI 1.30–1.53; basal impressions shallow but distinct, humeral calli well-defined; apices separately rounded. Punctures on elytral disc diffuse, superficial, inconspicuous; setae moderately long and dense, suberect.

Legs moderately long and slender; unmodified.

Aedeagus ( Figs 20–23 View FIGURES 12–23 ) stout, AeL 0.18 mm, median lobe in ventral view with ventral apical plate subtrapezoi- dal with slightly rounded sides, its apex gradually tapered to form a short, subtriangular rounded apical lobe shifted to the left and with its tip directed laterad; parameral apices reaching distal third of ventral apical plate, each with 4 long apical setae and one short, additionally with one subapical seta.

Female. Similar to male ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1–7 ) but with unmodified antennal clava and much smaller eyes; BL 1.31–1.38 mm; HL 0.28–0.29 mm, HW 0.24–0.25 mm, AnL 0.48 mm; PL 0.33–0.35 mm, PW 0.28–0.30 mm; EL 0.70–0.75 mm, EW 0.53–0.55 mm, EI 1.33–1.36.

Distribution. E Malaysia, northern Borneo.
