Short description. General coloration ocherous to brown ( Fig. 7A View FIGURE 7 ). Head. Greyish ocherous. Antenna dusky yellow to ocherous, about three times as long as head.
Thorax. Unpatterned. Postpronotum sometimes whitish. Wing ( Fig. 7B View FIGURE 7 ) tinged with brown, sparsely spotted with dark brown: costal region with six dark spots; tips of most veins at wing margin and all crossveins each with dark spot or seam; sizes of wing spots variable and sometimes weakened at posterior wing margin. Cell r 3 to m 1 with macrotrichiae near wing tip. Legs mainly yellow, without dark femoral bands. Halter pale yellow.
Abdomen. Brown to dark brown, caudal margin of each segment sometimes slightly dark. Male terminalia ( Figs 7C–G View FIGURE 7 ) with outer gonostylus broad on basal half, bearing large pointed lobe at middle of outer margin; distal half narrow with small claw-shaped lobe at outer apical edge ( Fig. 7D View FIGURE 7 ). Paramere with mesal-apical lobe flat fingershaped, about four times as long as wide and twice longer than lateral lobe ( Fig. 7G View FIGURE 7 ). Aedeagus almost straight, about seven times as long as wide in lateral view ( Fig. 7F View FIGURE 7 ). Apodeme of vesica directed anteroventrally ( Fig. 7F View FIGURE 7 ).
Measurements. Male (n = 33): body length: 4.7–6.5 mm; wing length: 5.4–7.8 mm. Female (n = 5): body length: 7.0– 8.2 mm; wing length: 7.0– 8.8 mm.
Distribution. Japan (Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu) and Kuril Islands (Kunashir Is) ( Fig. 13C View FIGURE 13 ).
Remarks. Alexander (1969) noted the similarity of this species to E. mishimai and that the wing coloration, conditions of wing spots, and shape of paramere were slightly different. However, additional specimens examined in this study show that each of these characters varies differently among localities and there is no clear morphological distinction between the two species. Therefore E. mishimai is synonymized with E. kintaro .
