Dinotoperla eucumbene McLellan View in CoL

( Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 A–D)

Larva. Remarks. Described by Hynes (1978) under D. arenaria with association by rearing specimens or by the examination of newly emerged specimens and associated exuviae. Theischinger (1982) synonymised D. arenaria with D. eucumbene .

Material examined: Victoria: 1 x larva: Tributary of Armstrong Creek at Road 1— Upper Yarra (Site Code 37ATT0007). -37.5951, 145.86954. Collected : 14-Dec-12, Collector: Z Billingham, Accession number: JMH1363. 1 x larva: Buffalo Creek . -36.62621, 146.75589. Collected: 13-Jan-14, Collector: G Dwyer. 1 x larva: Snowy Creek . -36.5624, 147.4106. Collected : 27-Apr-06, Collector: MDFRC voucher collection. 2 x larva: East Kiewa, Rocky Valley Branch above Lake Guy Junction . -36.80740, 147.22933. Collected: 09-Oct-87, Collector: MDFRC voucher collection. 1 x larva: Bunyip River upstream of Bunyip Weir—Bunyip State Park (Site Code 37BNY0040P). -37.93194, 145.74275. Collected : 11-Dec-12, Collector: Z Billingham, Accession number: JMH1261. Alpine National Park: 1 x larva: Jamieson River at junction Mt Sunday / Mitchell Tracks. -37.3424, 146.3729. Collected : 7-Oct-11, Collectors: J Mynott & R Brady, Accession number: JMH1168.

Length: 5–7 mm.

Colour: Pale yellowish.

Body: “Rather flattened dorsal surface is shagreened with closely packed hairs with swollen bases. These hairs resemble exaggerated Indian clubs, or chianti bottles, and they form marked fringes around the nota” ( Hynes (1978) description as D. arenaria , page 46). Often “fuzzy” in appearance as early instar. Broad and swollen robust setae give a scale-like appearance to dorsal surface and legs.

Head: Dorsal surface covered in swollen setae. Central area of head with a swollen V-shape; ocelli with a weltlike appearance. Antennal segments as broad at pedicle for approximately 30, then taper for 5 or so until segments are typical of the genus (thin and elongate).

Thorax: Thorax as long as abdomen; distinct and broad. Pronotum with posterior corners produced to points. Meso- and meta-nota with wing pads produced into points (juvenile), widely rounded in later instars. Anterior area and margins of pro- and meso-nota with long fine setae (often curled). Pronotum with a dense fringe of long, robust and broad sickle-shaped setae along all margins. Meso- and meta-nota with long, robust and broad sickle-shaped setae on posterior margin and margins of wingpads.

Legs: Inner margin of femora and outer margin of tibiae with long and broad robust setae. Outer margin of femora with scattered swollen setae.

Abdomen: Cerci tiny, segments very thin and elongate, first 5 segments more robust. Tergite X much longer than wide (length:width = 2). Hind margin of tergite with long and broad robust setae. Tergites 2–8 with two medio-lateral spots. Sternites with swollen robust setae present, more densely posteriorly. Paraprocts triangular and long.
