Diagnosis. D. punctulatipennis is separated from species in D. bicuspis group by the combination of following characters: anterior portion of pronotum (including angles and excavation) bearing continuous coarseı ocellate punctures (as in D. filgueirasi in fissus species-group); larger males bearing two lobes at anterior portion of pronotal disc; female ’ s pygidium excavated at apex; and females sixth abdominal ventrite with a medial lobe advancing beneath pygidium apex (as in D. vargasae ).

Morphological variation and remarks. Luederwaldt (1930) described this species based on a male and female from the state of Espírito Santo deposited in the Ohaus collectionı which was later incorporated to MZSP collection. Howeverı we have not found this type material there and we are basing this species diagnosis and separation on Luederwaldt ’ s (1926) description and on three specimens deposited in MZSP and determined by F.S. Pereira (in the 1960s)ı who probably had access to type material at that time. Based on both sources (Luederwaldt ’ s description and Pereiras ’ s determination)ı we have little doubt on the identity of this species because this species has a very characteristic female sixth ventrite and a peculiar puncture pattern on pronotum ( Figure 12 View Figure 12 (b)). Males BL: 14 – 18 mmı PW: 6 – 9 mm. Females BL: 14 – 17 mm and PW 6 – 8 mm. Dichotomius punctulatipennis was thoroughly described in Luederwaldt (1930) ı both in Portuguese and in German. Females analyzed at CEMT bear variation on the size of the sixth abdominal ventrite lobe. Independent of body length or pronotum widthı some females will have very short lobes that weakly advance beneath pygidium apex. Howeverı puncture pattern (mainly of the pronotum) is very similar among all females and males we have examined.
Distribution. Brazilian Atlantic Forest in the states of Alagoası Bahiaı Espírito Santoı Pernambucoı Rio de Janeiro and São Pauloı from low (150 m in Rio de Janeiro) to high altitudes (1160 m in Itamonteı Minas Gerais)ı and also in different types of Atlantic Forest (brejos de altitude in Pernambucoı lowland forest in Rio de Janeiro and sub-montane Atlantic forest in São Paulo).
