Crinipus leucozonipus Hampson, 1896 View in CoL
Figs. 1–3 View FIGURES 1 − 12 , 13 View FIGURE 13 , 14 View FIGURE 14
Syntypes: Aden (Yerbury, Nurse) (BMNH). The designation of a lectotype seems unnecessary as the four syntypes, which do exist, are certainly conspecific: 3 ♂ (BMNH): (1) “Aden, 95–69, Yerbury, 5.3.95 ”, “ Crinipus leucozonipus type $, Hmpsn.”, “BM genitalia slide 3841”; (2) “Aden, 95–69, Yerbury, 13.2.95 ”; (3) “Aden, 4.95” ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 − 12 ). 1 Ψ(MNHP): “Aden, 3.95”, “ leucozonipus Ψcotype Hps., J. Joisey, ded. 1920, coll. F. le Cerf” ( Figs. 2−3 View FIGURES 1 − 12 ).
Literature: Hampson, 1919: 54; Dalla Torre & Strand, 1925: 5; Gaede 1929: 518; Heppner & Duckworth, 1981: 41; Pühringer & Kallies, 2004: 43.
Additional specimens examined. 2 %, Saudi-Arabia, Riyadh, 13.Mar.1959; 1 %, id., 27.Mar.1959 (gen. prep. Bartsch 2005–01), leg. Dr. E. Diehl, ex coll. Dr. R. Bender ( SMNS).
Redescription of the male. ( Figs. 1 View FIGURES 1 − 12 , 14 View FIGURE 14 ). Alar expanse 14–16.5 mm, forewing length 6–7 mm, antenna 4– 4.5 mm, body length 7–8 mm. Head with near white labial palp; second palpomere laterally and mesally with a stripe of brownish-grey scales; frons bright silver-white; vertex dark brownish-grey, admixed with some creamy-white; between antenna and ocellus a small, bright silver-white spot; pericephalic scales white; antenna black, posterior side with a pure white longitudinal stripe. Thorax dark brownish-grey, dorsally mottled with short, white, hair-like scales; patagia and mesothorax laterally white; posterior part of tegula as well as lateral scale-tufts of metathorax whitish admixed. Abdomen with anal tuft dark brownish-grey, scarcely mixed with white; tergite 2 anteriorly narrow and tergite 4 posteriorly broad, bordered with white. Legs dark brownish-grey; ventral edge of femur with white, hair-like scales; tibia and each tarsomere distally with a narrow white ring; forecoxa white, medially brownish-grey; medial part of mid- and hindtibia laterally white. Wings dark brownish-grey, more or less densely mottled with white scales; underside somewhat more whitish; fringes pale brownish-grey; transparent areas well developed; apical area absent; discal spot of forewing rather narrow, of hindwing triangular, reaching vein M2.
Redescription of the female. ( Figs. 2–3 View FIGURES 1 − 12 ). Alar expanse 13.5 mm. The female’s thorax and abdomen are darker and without interspersed white, hair-like scales; sternites black; anal tuft small, dorso-medially white; scale tufts of tibiae smaller, absent from first hindtarsomere; forewings with smaller transparent areas and well-developed apical area, opaque between radial veins. Genitalia not examined.
Variation. Insignificant, only marginal differences in the extent of the whitish markings are recognisable.
Diagnosis. Crinipus leucozonipus is a rather small and inconspicuously coloured species, yet distinct within the genus, as detailed under C. marisa .
