Corethrella (Corethrella) colombiana Borkent View in CoL , new species
DIAGNOSIS: Male adult: unknown. Female adult: only extant species of Corethrella in the New World with each of flagellomeres 1–3 moderately elongate ( Fig. 28L), flagellomere 3 without a sensillum coeloconicum, flagellomere 12 with 2–3 sensilla coeloconica, a distinct midlength wing band (Fig. 69D), with the scutum mostly light brown but with the posterior anepisternum, most of the anepimeron and the katepisternum dark brown ( Fig. 48B), midfemur light to medium brown but with apical 1/3 pale, base of mid- and hind femur equally medium brown, and the base and apex of the hind tibia with discrete dark pigmentation (contrasting with pale apex of hind femur) ( Fig. 48B).
DESCRIPTION: Male adult. Unknown. Female adult. Descriptive statistics: see Tables 6–11. Head: Outline in anterior view laterally elongate ( Fig. 10A). Coronal suture short, extending ventrally about midway along area between ommatidia ( Fig. 16F). Two large setae on frons between ventromedial area of omma- tida (as in Fig. 16F). Antennal flagellomeres 1–5, base of flagellomere 6 light brown, apical portion of 6, all of flagellomeres 7–13 medium brown; pedicel with at least one distinctive, more elongate, stout, dorsal or dorsolateral seta; flagellomeres as in Fig. 28L, sensilla coeloconica distributed as in Table 1; flagellomere 13 with well-developed apical bifurcation. Clypeus ( Fig. 17 AO) squarish. Mandible with small, pointed teeth. Palpus ( Fig. 34K) pale; segment 3 somewhat ovoid, swollen at or near midlength. Thorax (as in Fig. 48B): Scutum, scutellum light brown, with darker anteromedial spot; mediotergite, pleura mostly dark brown with dorsal portion of anterior anepisternum light brown. Posterior portion of dorsocentral row with 2 elongate setae situated somewhat lateral to one another. Prescutal suture elongate, interrupted by area of pale cuticle. Anterior anepisternum divided diagonally by sinuous suture, dorsal portion about equal to ventral portion. Ventral portion of posterior anepisternum triangular, uniformly brown, with anterodorsal margin thick. Wing (Fig. 69D): Apex of R 2 basal to apex of M 1. Anterior margin with differently, discretely pigmented scales (indicating anterior margin of midlength band), with midlength band; veins (other than costa and wing margin) with well-developed scales. Halter light brown, about equal to scutellum. Legs (as in Fig. 48B): Light brown with following medium or dark brown: basal 0.6 forefemur, apical 0.2 of foretibia, basal 0.6–0.7 midfemur, apical 0.2 of midtibia, basal 0.6–0.7 midfemur; hind tibia pale with basal and apical discrete dark brown pigmentation. With only slender setae, lacking scales (except for some in patch of whip-like setae on posterior portion of hind tibia). Midleg with thick, subapical setae on each of at least tarsomeres 1–3. Claws of each leg equal to those of others; equal on each leg, simple (without inner teeth). Empodia slender. Abdomen: Light brown with sternites 1–2 slightly darker, segments 8–9 dark brown. Cercus medium brown.
Immatures. Unknown.
DISTRIBUTION AND BIONOMICS: Corethrella colombiana is known only from the type locality in Colombia (Fig. 133) at an altitude of 1465 m. It is unknown how the specimens were collected .
TAXONOMIC DISCUSSION: The types were originally placed in a pinning box labeled “ Corethrella jenningsi ” by an unknown identifier but the specimens at hand differ in a number of characteristics from the holotype of C. jenningsi . Members of C. colombiana have less extensive leg pigmentation, a much longer flagellomere 1, a more elongate palpal segment 3 and lack the dark abdominal sternites 1–2 of C. jenningsi .
TYPES: Holotype, female adult on microscope slide, labeled " HOLOTYPE Corethrella colombiana Borkent ”, “San Isidro, Colombia, Cnd, 27-V-44, F.R. Fosberg ”, “ Corethrella jenningsi ” (USNM) . Paratypes: 3 ♀ from type locality (2 ♀, USNM; 1 ♀, CNCI) .
DERIVATION OF SPECIFIC EPITHET: The name colombiana refers to the country from which this species is known.
