Centris abdominalis Friese, 1899 Nom. rev.
Centris agilis abdominalis Friese, 1899: 45 View in CoL .
Type data: This species was described from a series composed by four females collected in Venezuela, Brazil, and Mexico. According to the original description, two specimens are housed at MNHP, while the others are in the NMW. Only one of the syntypes mentioned by Friese (1899) was found in the MNHP being here designated the lectotype. The specimen was collected by the French zoologist Marie Firmin Bocourt (1819–1904) who collaborated with his colleague Auguste Duméril (1812–1870) on a series of articles called “Mission Scientifique au Mexique et dans l’Amérique Centrale”, a result of Bocourt’s scientific expedition to Mexico and Central America in 1864–66. The lectotype has the following data label: [black rimmed margin] Museum Paris Hte - Vera Paz Bocourt 188-66 [printed]\ Type. [handwritten]\ [circular label] 188 66 [handwritten]\ Centris agilis abdominalis ♀ Friese [handwrit-ten] det. Friese 1898 [printed] \ [red label] Holotype [printed] ( MNHP).
Type locality: Friese (1899) mentioned that the specimens he studied were from Venezuela, Brazil (Piauhy = Piauí) and Mexico (Vera Cruz = Veracruz). Nevertheless , the specimen found at MNHP bears a label “Hte Vera Paz” (= Haute Vera Paz). This locality is actually in Guatemala, not in Mexico, so the type locality is different from that cited by him .
Comment: This species appeared as junior synonym of C. agilis Smith, 1874 in the monograph of Centris published by Friese (1901). Contrary to Friese’s interpretation, both species are different, even belonging to different subgenera. The clypeal disc in C. agilis is convex, while in C. abdominalis is flat (lateral view). The basitibial plates are broadly rounded in C. agilis , while in C. abdominalis are relatively lanceolate. In addition, the dorsal surface of the first tergum is relatively smooth and glabrous in C. agilis , while in C. abdominalis has fine punctation and long and dense yellow pubescence.
