Celeuthetes hebridarum Faust View in CoL
Fig. 50
Celeuthetes hebridarum Faust, 1897: 262 View in CoL (in key). — Paulian 1945: 182, figs 1-4.
DESCRIPTION. — Derm black or piceous, legs (incl. tarsi) and funicle usually a little reddish. Scales dull, grey, absent on apical part of rostrum, on tarsi and funicle, pitted, somewhat asperate particularly on sides of elytra; setae white, for most part recumbent.
Transverse sulcus at base of rostrum usually rather distinct also on middle beside fovea of forehead. Elytra, in male, transversely convex on basal one-third of dorsum, then gradually flattened or impressed towards top of declivity; apex in female, in lateral view, only slightly curved downwards.
Male: aedeagal apodemes at base curving outwards, in ventral view arising from lateral angle.
Female: setae on interstriae 1-5 recumbent or nearly so; apex of elytra, in lateral view, weakly curved downward.
Length: 4.5-6.5 mm.
TYPE MATERIAL. — Two male, two female syntype specimens present, all four labeled as ‘ Type’. Lectotype male, 5.5 x 3.0 mm, ‘ N. Hebr., Desbr., hebridarum Faust, Coll. Faust’, SMT.D. Paratypes: same data, SMT. D. Identified non-type specimens with BPBM, IRSN, NHML, NZAC, SRFP .
MATERIAL EXAMINED. — Vanuatu. Vanua Lava , Espíritu Santo , Aoba , Maebo , Pentecost , Malekula , Lamen , Ambrym , Epi , Emae , Efate, Erromango, Tanna. 724 specimens .
HOSTPLANTS. — Some specimens found feeding on Cordia (Cucurbitaceae) .
ETYMOLOGY. — The latinised name ‘hebridárum’ (incorrect declination: it should have been ‘hebridum’) for genitive plural of New Hebrides, former name of Vanuatu.
REMARKS. — Widespread species occuring from Banks Is. in the north to Tanna in the south, with variants, as usual, when species are found on a wider geographical range in Vanuatu. On average a bit smaller than the other two species. Most dissected specimens had the entire ovipositor introverted inside the vagina, consequently hemisternites and styli ending up facing cephalad inside the vagina with the blade of sternite 8 also introverted at posterior end of vagina.
