Diagnosis. Wing length 1.8–2.1 mm. Fronto-orbital yellowish, faintly darkened to upper fronto-orbital seta; face greyish in upper half, yellow below; pedicel black; leg brown, with apex of femur and base of tibia yellow in the fore leg; calypter greyish with margin black, fringe black. Aedeagus (Fig. 177 and 178 in Spencer & Stegmaier, 1973): basiphallus moderately sclerotized, with a long extension distally; mesophallus wide basally, about same length as distiphallus; distiphallus strongly sclerotized, forming two tubes projecting upward.

Host-plants. Lamiaceae— Hyptis pectinate L., Hyptis capitate Jacq. , Hyptis mutabilis (Rich.) ; Marsypianthes chamaedrys (Vahl.) Kuntze , Ocimum basilicum L., Salvia sp.

Distribution. Brazil, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Saint-Martin, USA, Venezuela.

Comments. Calycomyza hyptidis is an oligophagous species, associated with several Lamiaceae genera. Larvae form irregular , star-shaped mines, with frass deposited in the center. Adults can be easily differentiated from other species of this genus by the characteristic shape of the aedeagus.
