Brachysomus carpathicus Košťál, 1992: 40 . Type locality: Romania, Braşov.

Redescription. Measurements: Body length 1.80–2.60 mm, width 1.10–1.60 mm. Vestiture: Body covered with recumbent scales and erect oblong-lanceolate setae. Scales grayish-brown, oval, excised at apex, densely covering upper side of elytra and head. Disc of pronotum sparsely scaled. Setae at elytra erect, forming straight and sparse rows at interstriae, as long as 0.5–0.7 of interstriae width. Antennal funicle with thin, sparse hairs. Antennal scape, tibiae, and tarsi with dense hairs and widened setae. Abdomen covered with recumbent hairs and piliform scales.

Colouration: Body, legs and antennae brown.

Head: Rostrum conical, weakly narrowed from base to middle, as long as wide or weakly elongate (RL/RW = 1.00–1.20). Pterygia well visible from above, strongly projecting from outline of rostrum. Epifrons parallel-sided, distinctly convex longitudinally, separated from vertex by weak transverse depression. Vertex weakly convex. Eyes large, (VW/ELD in males = 1.64–1.82, in females = 2.09–2.25), oval, weakly convex, slightly invaginated, situated weakly lower than level of vertex. Antennae: scape weakly curved, evenly widened distally; funicular antennomeres: 1st and 2nd elongate, almost uniform; 3rd as long as wide; 4 th –7th transverse. Club spindle-shaped, slightly separated from 7th funicular antennomere, 1st club antennomere trapeziform, evenly widened distally.

Thorax: Pronotum variable, moderately or strongly transverse [PL/PW = 0.56–0.81 (0.69)], strongly convex at sides, moderately constricted near anterior margin; disc almost flat, finely and densely punctate. Pronotum at base usually weakly narrower than base of elytra, but in large females which have strongly convex elytra such difference more distinct. Elytra: broadly-oval or globose (EL/EW = 1.14–1.22), sharply convex at sides and disc (especially in females). Base of elytra weakly concave. Striae narrow, punctures weakly separated, 2x narrower than interstriae. Interstriae weakly convex and shiny. Legs: Femora distinctly swollen at middle part, tibiae slender and long, straight externally, widened in distal angle, weakly sinuate internally. Hind tibiae in male evenly widened distally and weakly mucronate. Second tarsomere strongly transverse, 3rd with broad lobes. Fifth fore tarsomere extending beyond apical lobes of 3rd by 0.86–1.14 length of the lobes.

Abdomen: Posterior margin of 1st ventrite curved. Male 5th ventrite sharply convex, without subapical depression, with apical margin obtuse, rounded in females. Male genitalia:Aedeagus moderately sclerotized; median lobe slightly constricted in middle part, apical third evenly narrowed and broadly rounded at apex. Spermatheca with well developed collum almost as long as ramus.

Diagnosis. Brachysomus carpathicus is closely related to B. laticollis , differs in the following characters: elytra strongly swollen; vestiture dense; setae at elytral interstriae strongly erect; hind tibiae in male evenly widened distally, not sinuate, weakly mucronate; scales weakly excised; posterior margin of 1st ventrite sinuate; epifrons separated from vertex by weak transverse depression; endophallus with very sparse spiculate fields, spermatheca with well developed collum.

Distribution. Romania (Braşov), Serbia (Pirot).
