ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1856: 196.

TYPE LOCALITY: Rondani gave no type locality in his original description but presumably it is Italy because the work deals with Italian species .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, syntype, 5 specimens, syntypes (sex not determinable, one missing its abdomen; two on the same pin, extremely moldy; one with thorax and left wing only; one covered with mold) ( MZUF: Box 64): Bolithobia Rndn. / lateralis Rnd. , Parma / 3293; 1 specimen, syntype (sex not determinable, missing abdomen) ( MZUF: Box 64): Bolithobia Rndn. / lateralis Rnd. , Parma / 3293 / [one label with drawings of head, wing, antenna and leg].

CURRENT STATUS: Hackman et al. (1988) did not list this nominal species; doubtful species of Mycetophilidae (P. Chandler, pers. comm., December 2013).

REMARKS: Rondani’s (1856: 196) key for the genus Bolithobia Rondani, 1856 lists Bolithobia lateralis as its type species, but he did not provide a detailed description, type locality, number or sex of the specimens. Seven syntypes were found in this study. Rondani described this nominal species under the generic name Bolithobia , which is an “incorrect original spelling of Bolithomya Rondani, 1856 ” ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 38). Peter Chandler (pers. comm., December 2013) considered it a doubtful species because it cannot be recognized on the basis of Rondani’s description.
