Barycnemis costaricensis Khalaim & Broad , sp. nov.
( Figs 14–16 View FIGURES 9 – 16 , 28 View FIGURES 22 – 28 )
Comparison. The new species belongs to the Zasternaulax species group of Horstmann (2010) which also includes six Nearctic species ( B. brevicauda Horstmann , B. dissimilis (Gravenhorst) , B. linearis Ashmead , B. longicauda Horstmann , B. rufipes Horstmann and B. striata Horstmann ), and two Mexican species ( B. tamaulipeca Khalaim and B. tlaxcala Khalaim ). Barycnemis costaricensis sp. nov. is readily distinguished from other species in this genus as the female has a slender flagellum with the apical 1 to 6 flagellomeres pale ( Fig. 28 View FIGURES 22 – 28 ). It also differs from two other Neotropical species of Barycnemis by the shorter basal part of the propodeum which is 1.25–1.75 x as long as the apical area in B. costaricensis sp. nov., and 2.5–3.0 x in Mexican species. Males of the new species have an entirely fuscous flagellum, slender legs and a generally less specialized morphology, thus being much less recognizable as Barycnemis than females.
Description. Female. Body length about 4.0 mm. Fore wing length almost 2.8 mm.
Head strongly rounded behind eyes in dorsal view; temple 0.67 x as long as eye width. Mandible slender, upper tooth much longer than lower tooth. Clypeus smooth, very finely granulate with sparse fine punctures on extreme upper part. Malar space short, half as long as basal width of mandible (in holotype) or shorter. Antenna slender, filiform, with 21–23 flagellomeres (22 in holotype); flagellomeres 2 and 3 about 3.5 x, subapical flagellomeres almost twice as long as broad; flagellomeres 4–7 with conspicuous subapical finger-shaped structures on outer surface. Face and frons finely granulate, impunctate. Vertex very finely granulate, almost smooth. Temple smooth, shining. Occipital carina complete.
Mesosoma elongate. Pronotum and mesoscutum finely granulate, impunctate. Notaulus very shallow. Foveate groove of mesopleuron long, thin, linear, with transverse wrinkles, extending over almost entire length of mesopleuron ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 9 – 16 ). Mesopleuron smooth, shining. Propodeum with shallow, thin basal furrow. Dorsolateral area impunctate, very shallowly granulate, shining, anteriorly almost smooth. Basal part of propodeum 1.5–1.75 x as long as apical area (1.58 x in holotype). Propodeal spiracle round, distance between spiracle and pleural carina subequal to half diameter of spiracle. Apical area flat, anteriorly broadly rounded, granulate.
Fore wing with vein 2 m-cu, unpigmented in anterior 0.6. Vein 2 rs-m very short and very thick. Veins Rs +2 r and Rs angled about 90°. Vein Rs +2 r somewhat longer than width of pterostigma. R 1 not reaching apex of fore wing. Hind wing with vein cu 1& cu-a distinctly reclivous.
Legs robust, femora and tibiae thickened ( Fig. 15 View FIGURES 9 – 16 ). Hind femur 2.6 x as long as broad, 1.17 x as long as tibia. Hind basitarsus 0.9 x as long as hind tibia. Hind spurs distinctly curved. Claws slender, strongly curved, not pectinate.
First tergite slender, 3.5 x as long as posteriorly broad, smooth except for dorsally finely striate petiole. Glymma present, without distinct furrow joining glymma to ventral part of postpetiole ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 9 – 16 ). Second tergite 2.27 x as long as anteriorly broad. Thyridial depression deep and long, more than 3.0 x as long as broad. Ovipositor short, slender, almost straight basally and distinctly upcurved in apical third ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 9 – 16 ); sheath 1.1 x as long as first tergite and 1.3 x as long as hind tibia.
Colour pattern as in Fig. 28 View FIGURES 22 – 28 . Head, mesosoma and first tergite black. Palpi and mandible (teeth dark red) yellowish. Scape and pedicel of antenna and tegula brownish yellow. Flagellum brownish black, sometimes yellowish basally, with 1–6 apical flagellomeres pale. Pterostigma brown, paler proximally and distally. Legs yellowish, hind coxa dark brown. Metasoma beyond first tergite predominantly dark brown.
Male. Malar space shorter. Antenna with 23 flagellomeres, weakly narrowed apically, less slender than in female. Legs slender, femora and tibiae not thickened, hind basitarsus much shorter than tibia, hind spurs more or less straight. First and second metasomal tergites narrower.
Variation. In general a rather uniform species. Sometimes the dorsolateral area of the propodeum is more or less entirely smooth with very shallow, indistinctly granulate sculpture. In one specimen from Estacion Sirena, the basal part of the propodeum is only 1.25 x as long as the apical area.
