Eurynotus denticosta Mulsant and Rey, 1854a: 29 .– Mulsant and Rey 1854b: 173; Gebien 1938: 414; Koch 1954a: 276; 1954b: 2; 1955: 420; Banaszkiewicz 2006: 63; Kamiński 2016: 237.
Diagnosis: Biolus denticosta is arguably the most straightforward to diagnose species (along with B. sauroides ).The structure of the elytra is unique within the genus (with extremely large puncta - tion and costae giving the appearance of a lattice -like structure). A redescription is provided here along with our morphological
analyses to help support this species’ inclusion in Biolus, out - line differences with other, more distantly related but morpho - logically similar taxa (e.g. genus Zadenos Laporte from subtribe Melambiina; see: Kamiński 2015), and provide a more detailed, up -to -date description.
Redescription: Length 9–12 mm; width 3–5 mm.Head: Intensely, coarsely punctate, punctures closely spaced, separated by ≤1 puncture diameter to confluent. Mentum with apical notch. Eye with strongly impressed sulcus situated around perimeter of dorsal lobe. Prothorax: Pronotum coarsely punctate, punctures separated by ≤1 puncture diameter to confluent. Hypomeron rugose, with large and shallow punctures. Pterothorax: Elytron costate, with macrotubercles on disc on intervals between costae. Without microtuberculation on disc or epipleura. Abdomen: Punctate. Abdominal ventrite V coarsely punctate, punctures separated by ≥1 puncture diameter without larger, setigerous punctures. Faint marginal groove on apex. Females with median apical notch. Legs: Male midtibia with large spur -like projection at apex. Tarsi unmodified in males and females. Tarsal setae dark or black. Male terminalia: Parameres weakly tapered and broad, rounded apically. Female terminalia: Bursa copulatrix without sclerites or accessory pouch.
Material examined: Lectotype, here designated ( HNHM): ‘ C. B. Esp. Coll. R. Oberthür ex. Coll. Deyrolle / Paratypus 1854 Eurynotus denticosta Mulsant/ Red LECTOTYPE label’ Note: As the original description lacks information defining the number or specificity of specimens used, a specimen from the presumed syntype series is here designated as a lectotype to fix the taxonomic status of the species. Paralectotype ( HNHM): Same labels as Lectotype, with additional yellow ‘PARALECTOTYPE’ label.
(See Supporting Information, Appendix S1 for additional ma - terial examined.)
Distribution: South Africa (Fig. 9).
