Anthidium appendiculatum Ducke, 1910: 102 . Holotype male, Brazil: Ceará (ZMB, examined).

Austrostelis maranhensis Urban, 2005: 96 . Holotype male, Brazil: Maranhão (DZUP, examined). New synonym.

Comments and diagnosis

The whereabouts of the type material of Anthidium appendiculatum was considered unknown by Urban and Moure (2007), but the holotype was located in the ZMB by GARM ( Figure 8 (a–f)) . The study of the type specimen revealed that it corresponds to A. maranhensis , which is here formally synonymized under A. appendiculata . This species resembles A. flava in the predominantly yellow maculae on the body, but can be differentiated by the mesepisternum largely pale yellow, both in its lateral and ventral portions; metasoma black with yellow bands on T1 – T7 ; disc of T3 with denser punctures than disc of T2 .

Distribution. BRAZIL: Bahia, Ceará, Maranhão.

Paratype female as same date of holotype ‘ DZUP 029075’. Holotype male of Anthidium appendiculatum ‘ Ceará /Baturité/ 11-4-1909 /Ducke’ ‘ Brazil /Estado do/Ceará’ ‘ Anthidium / appendiculatum / ♂ Ducke’ ‘Coll./Friese’ ‘Typus’ ‘ Holotype / Anth. appendiculatum / Ducke, 1910 /det. Melo, 2015’.

Additional material examined

The specimen DZUP 29074 from Maracás, Bahia, transferred from A. iheringi to A. maranhensis by Urban (2006), was re-examined and is confirmed here as A. appendiculata .
