( A. erinacea Boiss. ):

Plant forming a dense cushion 5-10 cm in diameter, with stems covered with densely imbricate leaves. Flowers solitary and terminal, rarely 2 or 3 together, on the surface of the cushion, not on protruding stems. Sepals 4-6 mm. • E. Spain; S.E. France (Mont Ventoux); N. Portugal (Serra da Estrêla).

Intermediates between these two subspecies occur on Mont Ventoux.

A. racemosa Willk. , Bot. Zeit. 5: 239 (1847), from S. Spain, is laxly caespitose, has acute, mucronate, more or less distant and not imbricate leaves, and 2-5 flowers in lax racemes (or rarely solitary flowers). The sepals are 4-6 mm long, ovate-lanceolate, acute and stronglyveined. It may meritsubspecific status under 11.
