FAMILY VIPERIDAE Oppel 1811 , 376
(7 genera, 13 species, 3 endemic species). Wallach et al. (2014) credited Gray (1825 [p. 205]) for the Viperidae . Oppel used Viperini in his key to the Ophidii.
Agkistrodon Palisot de Beauvois 1799, 381 (2 species)
Agkistrodon bilineatus (Günther 1863, 364). Porras et al. (2013), in their revision of A. bilineatus , considered this species (sensu stricto) a member of the Honduran fauna based on a photograph of a specimen collected in Copán. Therefore, this species is hesitantly listed here (also see A. howardgloydi ).
Agkistrodon howardgloydi Conant 1984 , 135. Porras et al. (2013) elevated this nominal form from a subspecies of A. bilineatus based on some seemingly trivial differences, largely taken from previous literature. A thorough morphological and molecular study of specimens in this complex is needed.
Atropoides Werman 1992 , 34 (2 species, 1 endemic species)
Atropoides indomitus (E) E. Smith & Ferrari-Castro 2008, 59
Atropoides mexicanus (A.M.C. Duméril, Bibron & Duméril 1854b, 1521)
Bothriechis Peters 1859 , 278 (4 species, 2 endemic species)
Bothriechis guifarroi (E) Townsend, Medina-Flores, Wilson, Jadin & Austin 2013, 85. Genetic evidence discovered by Townsend et al. (2013b, 85) also suggested that more than one species could be present within this nominal form.
Bothriechis marchi (E) (Barbour & Loveridge 1929, 1)
Bothriechis schlegelii (Berthold 1845, 42)
Bothriechis thalassinus Campbell & Smith 2001, 1002
Bothrops Wagler 1824 , 50 (1 species)
Bothrops asper ( Garman 1884, 124)
Cerrophidion Campbell & Lamar 1992 , 24 (1 species)
Cerrophidion wilsoni Jadin, Townsend, Castoe & Campbell 2012 , 461. There are no morphological characters that will distinguish this nominal form from other forms previously allocated to C. godmani (Günther 1863 [p. 364]) (see Jadin et al. 2012). Only combinations of several external morphological characters, all individually overlapping with those of other C. godmani complex species, will distinguish this species apart from its molecular characters.
Crotalus Linnaeus 1758 , 214 (1 species)
Crotalus simus Latreille 1801 , 202 in Sonnini & Latreille 1801a
Porthidium Cope 1871 , 207 (2 species)
Porthidium nasutum (Bocourt 1868, 202) Porthidium ophryomegas (Bocourt 1868, 201)
