Genus TRUNCACTEOCINA Kuroda & Habe, 1955 View in CoL

Truncacteocina Kuroda & Habe, 1954: 10 [not available]; Kuroda & Habe, 1955: 5. Type species: Acteocina oyamai Kuroda & Habe, 1954 [= Truncacteocina arata (Watson, 1883) ; Recent, Japan], by subsequent designation of Habe (1955).

DIAGNOSIS. — Shell morphology. Shell external, solid, oval to elongate. Aperture longitudinal, long, anteriorly rounded. Spire very short, apex truncate. Columella slightly thickened and often with an anterior callus. Operculum absent. Protoconch flattened, attached to the teleoconch by the aperture.

Anatomy. Unknown. All shells collected lacked soft parts.

REMARKS. — The generic name Truncacteocina was introduced by Kuroda & Habe (1955) for species of Acteocina with a low spire and a truncate apex. This taxon is solely based on shell morphology and not supported by anatomical differences. Some of the species assigned to Uticulastra by Marcus (1977) could fit the definition of Truncacteocina .

An anatomical revision of Truncacteocina and the similar genus Decorifer Iredale, 1937 is necessary to determine the taxonomic status of these names. In the meantime Truncacteocina is here used for species with a low spire and a truncate apex with the protoconch embedded in the teleoconch.
