Acreichthys radiatus (Linnaeus, 1758) —Radial filefish

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on WAM material (WAM P.30342-004). DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Central Indonesia east to Philippines and New Guinea, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Solitary in coastal and lagoon reefs, 2– 12 m. Marine.

Acreichthys tomentosus (Linnaeus, 1758) —Seagrass filefish

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang as Stephanolepis tomentosus by Herre (1933: 12); photographed by A. Berberian. CAS; KFRS and WAM material.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Sri Lanka east to Philippines and New Guinea, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to Queensland ( Australia) and New Caledonia. Solitary, among seagrass or in sheltered coral reefs, 0– 15 m. Marine.

Aluterus monoceros (Linnaeus, 1758) —Unicorn filefish

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on WAM material (WAM P.30617-014). DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Worldwide in tropical seas, in western Pacific south to northern New Zealand. Occasionally in shallow water by steep drop-offs in coral and rocky reefs; solitary or in pairs; juveniles are pelagic, seen under floating objects, 1– 50 m. Marine.

Aluterus scriptus (Osbeck, 1765) —Scrawled filefish ( Fig. 31 )

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang as Osbeckia scripta by Munro (1958: 290). Specimens observed and photographed at St. CTR 29, CTR 31, CTR 35, CTR 36. KFRS and WAM material. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Worldwide in tropical and subtropical oceans, in western Pacific south to northern New Zealand. Found in lagoon and seaward coral and rocky reefs, occasionally under floating objects; juveniles may travel with weed rafts in open ocean for a long time, 3– 120 m. Marine.

Amanses scopas (Cuvier, 1829) —Broom filefish

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens photographed at St. CTR 0 4. AMS and CAS material (AMS I.17090-012; CAS 65634, 65635, 65636).

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Red Sea and East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Hawaiian and Tuamotu islands, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Found in clear coastal to seaward reefs, usually in rich coral areas with rubble patches or gutters, 1– 18 m. Marine.

Cantherhines dumerilii (Hollard, 1854) —Yelloweye filefish

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens observed and photographed at St. CTR 0 4, CTR 13, CTR 16, CTR 24, CTR 28.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Red Sea and East Africa, Comores and Mascarenes east to Mexico, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to Lord Howe, Rapa and Ducie islands. In offshore coral and rocky reefs, 1– 35 m. Marine.

Cantherhines pardalis (Rüppell, 1835) —Wirenet filefish, honeycomb filefish

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Randall (2011: 17). Specimens observed and photographed at St. CTR 0 7, CTR 0 8, CTR 14. WAM material.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Red Sea, East and South Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Marquesas Islands and Pitcairn Group, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to Lord Howe and Rapa islands. Found in seaward coral and rocky reef slopes, often in silty habitat, sometimes with drifting seagrass, 0– 20 m. Marine.

Oxymonacanthus longirostris (Bloch & Schneider, 1801) —Longnose filefish

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens observed and photographed at St. CTR 0 1, CTR 14. ANSP material (ANSP 117119).

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Samoa, north to Ryukyu and Ogasawara islands, south to southern Great Barrier Reef ( Australia), Lord Howe Island, New Caledonia and Tonga. Fond in clear lagoon and seaward reefs with live Acropora corals, 1– 30 m. Marine.

Paraluteres prionurus (Bleeker, 1851) —Mimic filefish

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens photographed by A. Berberian. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. East and South Africa and western Mascarenes east to Marshall Islands, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to Great Barrier Reef ( Australia) and New Caledonia. Found in clear lagoon and seaward coral and rocky reefs, 1– 25 m. Marine.

Pervagor janthinosoma (Bleeker, 1854) —Blackbar filefish

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Hutchins (1986: 22). Specimens photographed at St. CTR 0 4. WAM material.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. East and South Africa and Mascarenes east to Caroline and Tongan islands, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to New South Wales ( Australia), Lord Howe and Norfolk islands. Found in coral-rich areas of clear lagoon and seaward reefs, 1– 20 m. Marine.

Pervagor melanocephalus (Bleeker, 1853) —Blackhead filefish

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Indonesia east to Marshall Islands and Samoa, north to Ryukyu and Ogasawara islands, south to Queensland ( Australia), New Caledonia and Lord Howe Island. Solitary or in pairs, in seaward coral reefs, 1– 61 m. Marine.

Pervagor nigrolineatus (Herre, 1927) —Blackline filefish

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Hutchins (1986: 17). ANSP and WAM material. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Indonesia east to Palau and Solomon Islands, north to Philippines, south to northern Westzern Australia and New Guinea. Solitary, secretive, often among soft corals, 3– 25 m. Marine.

Pseudalutarius nasicornis (Temminck & Schlegel, 1850) —Rhinoceros filefish

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on AMS material (AMS I.16751-007). DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. South and East Africa, Seychelles, Madagascar and western Mascarenes east to Guam and New Guinea, north to southern Japan, south to Australia and New Caledonia. Found in sheltered coastal reefs, 2– 55 m. Marine.

Rudarius minutus Tyler, 1970 —Minute filefish

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on AMS and ANSP material (AMS I.16671-021; ANSP 117134).

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Eastern Indonesia east to Palau and New Guinea, north to Sabah ( Malaysia), south to Queensland ( Australia). Solitary or in small groups, among gorgonians, soft corals, or fire coral, 2– 15 m. Marine.
