Brown and Heinemann (1972) considered the Jamaican E. mithridates (Fabricius) to be a separate species from the mainland E. thraso , and Cock (2000) followed this, pointing out the apparent differences in the caterpillars. In his unpublished 1996 honours thesis, A.D. Warren (1996) reinstated the genus Eantis for thraso , which he considered a valid species, and this was subsequently published ( Warren 2000) but without explanation. These changes were not followed by Mielke (2004), but were accepted by Pelham (2008) for the North American checklist, and so are followed here.

Evans (1953) treated Pythonides jovianus as having four subspecies, but Austin and Warren (2002) suggest that it should be treated as a single variable species pending further study. This species still needs confirmation from Trinidad.
