Type species. Ophidiaster ophidianus ( Lamarck, 1816) View in CoL ( type by monotypy).

Remarks. The genus Ophidiaster is composed of 24 species, and six of them are recorded in the Atlantic Ocean: O. alexandri Verrill, 1915 , O. bayeri Clark, 1948 , O. bullisi ( Downey, 1970) , O. guildingi Gray, 1840 , O. ophidianus ( Lamarck, 1816) and O. reyssi Sibuet, 1977 . Only O. alexandri and O. guildingi are recorded in Brazil until this date.
