scientific name

Thereianthus spicatus (L.) G.J. Lewis
status

Gladiolus spicatus Linnaeus , Species Plantarum 1: 37. 1753.

“Habitat in Africa.” RCN: 305.

Type not designated.

Original material: Herb. Linn. No. 59.3 (LINN).

Current name: Thereianthus spicatus (L.) G.J. Lewis ( Iridaceae ).

Note: See notes on 59.3 (LINN) by Merrill (in J. Arnold Arbor. 19: 329. 1938), and by Lewis (in J. S. African Bot. 7: 41. 1941) on confused usage of the name. Manning & Goldblatt (in Bothalia 34: 105. 2004) wrongly indicated unspecified material in LINN (presumably sheet 59.3) as the holotype but this choice was published after 1 Jan 2001 and so the omission of the phrase “designated here” or an equivalent (Art. 7.11) means that it is not effective.
