TYPE LOCALITY: China, Szechwan, Moupin .
DISTRIBUTION: N.E. China to N. Thailand, N. Burma and Vietnam; Hainan; Taiwan.
COMMENT: Includes canorus, champa, chihliensis, culturatus, elegans , littoreus, lotipes, luticolor, mentosus, sacer, sinianus, yaoshanensis, and zappeyi; see Musser and Chiu, 1979, J. Mammal., 60:581-592, and Musser, 1981, Bull. Am. Mus . Nat. Hist., 168(3):237, 251, 255, who reviewed this species and stated that the relationship of confucianus to niviventer needs clarification. Formerly included in Maxomys ; see Musser et al., 1979, J. Mammal., 60:592-605.
