Holotype.

USA (S!).

A characteristic species originally described from N. America. We have not sequenced the holotype, but its macro- and micromorphology (Figure 11a) are very similar to that of the collections here studied (Figure 2h).

Habitat and distribution.

Tulostoma lloydii is recorded from N. America and Europe ( Wright 1987). In Europe it has a Mediterranean distribution, having been reported from Italy and Spain. According to Wright (1987) it is a species of "forest soil, among humus and plant debris". The studied material from Italy was collected in a garden, but there are also findings from more xeric environments on calcareous soil and on littoral sand dunes in Spain.
