Comments

Gurney (1947: 384) established Dryococelus to include only one species, Karabidion australe Montrouzier, 1855 from Lord Howe Island, which was formerly treated a member of Eurycantha Boisduval, 1835 . He placed it in close relation to Eurycantha Boisduval , Thaumatobactron Günther, 1929 and Canachus Stål, 1875 and provided a key to distinguish between these genera. Montrouzier (1855: 81) proposed Karabidion as a replacement name for Eurycantha Boisduval (Type-species: Eurycantha horrida Boisduval, 1835 , by monotypy) and included E. horrida Boisduval , the only previously known member of the genus, as well as three new species, among which was K. australe . As Montrouzier (1855: 81) had not designated a type-species for his Karabidion , it took on E. horrida Boisduval as the type-species (ICZN, 1999), and consequently became an objective synonym of Eurycantha Boisduval ( Gurney, 1947: 386) . The subsequent designation of K. australe Montrouzier as the type-species of Karabidion by Stål (1875: 90) was thus invalid.
