Galium saxatile Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 106. 1753.

“Habitat in Hispaniae maritimis lapidosis.” RCN: 866.

Type not designated.

Original material: Herb. Linn. No. 129.8 (LINN); Herb. Clifford: 34, Galium 8 (BM); [icon] in Jussieu in Mém. Acad. Roy. Sci. Paris 1714: 380, t. 15. 1714.

Current name: Galium saxatile L. (Rubiaceae).

Note: Various authors have perceived nomenclatural problems with this name, chiefly because current usage does not agree with Linnaeus’ original concept, which was apparently of a Spanish plant. Rauschert (in Feddes Repert. 79: 420. 1969), for example, treated it as a nomen ambiguum. The name, however, is in use.
