Cracca purpurea Linnaeus View in CoL , Species Plantarum 2: 752. 1753.

"Habitat in Zeylona." RCN: 5565.

Basionym of: Galega purpurea (L.) L. (1759) .

Lectotype (Fawcett & Rendle, Fl. Jamaica 4: 19. 1920; Ali in Biologia (Lahore) 10: 28. 1964): Herb. Hermann 1: 37, No. 301 (BM-000621363) .

Generitype of Cracca Linnaeus , nom. rej.

Current name: Tephrosia purpurea (L.) Pers. View in CoL ( Fabaceae : Faboideae ).

Note: Cracca villosa was treated as the generitype by Britton & Brown, Ill. Fl. N. U. S., ed. 2, 2: 372. 1913 (see McNeill & al. in Taxon 36: 366. 1987). However, under Art. 10.5, Ex. 7 (a voted example) of the Vienna Code, this is a type choice made under the American Code and is to be replaced under Art. 10.5b by Green’s choice ( Prop. Brit. Bot.: 176. 1929) of C. purpurea L. Fawcett & Rendle ( Fl. Jamaica 4: 19. 1920) indicated Herb. Hermann material ( BM) as type. Although there is material in two separate volumes, it appears to have been part of a single gathering. Consequently theirs is accepted as the first typification (Art. 9.15), with the choice subsequently restricted by Ali. Although Forbes (in Bothalia 4: 974. 1948) designated 924.7 (LINN) as the type, this choice is pre-dated by that of Fawcett & Rendle.
