Xenocurgus tasmanicus Haupt, 1937a:135 View in CoL . Type data: type status and whereabouts unknown ♀. Type locality: Tasmania (as Van Diemens Land ).
Distribution: TAS.
Subfamily Pompilinae
The Australian Pompilinae is represented by 13 genera and 132 species. Species of Ctenostegus Haupt, 1930 , Turneromyia Banks, 1941 , Episyron Schiødte, 1837 , Paracyphononyx Gribodo, 1884 , Anoplius Dufour, 1834 and Pompilus Fabricius, 1798 primarily consist of wasps with a black integument, coloured or banded with grey/silvery pubescence. The “collaris” mimicry complex of Evans involves species of Ctenostegus , Turneromyia , Paracyphononyx and Episyron with black and orange colouration. Three species of Pompilinae , Batozonellus maculifrons (Smith, 1873) , Anoplius (Orientanoplius) canifrons (Smith, 1855) and Pompilus cinereus ( Fabricius, 1775) have extensive extralimital distributions.

Anoplius Dufour, 1834 View in CoL
Anoplius Dufour, 1834 View in CoL is a large genus with several subgenera. Psammochares Fabricius, 1796 View in CoL has been suppressed ( ICZN1946), but has as its type Sphex fusca Linnaeus, 1761 View in CoL , which is a synonym of Sphex viatica Linnaeus 1758 View in CoL , currrently placed in Anoplius View in CoL . Between 1910 and 1917 Turner described or transfered several species to Psammochares View in CoL , where they have remained unnoticed. Unlike the situation in Pompilus Fabricius, 1798 View in CoL (see below) there is no dispute over the validity of the subgenera and consequently, those species not currently placed in subgenera are here listed as unplaced, rather than listed in Anoplius View in CoL s. l.

Pompilus Evans, 1972a:11 View in CoL [notes].
Pompilus Naumann, 1991:977 View in CoL [figs.].
Pompilus View in CoL was revised by Day (1981) and restricted to a few Old World species. Wasbauer & Kimsey (1985) rejected the work of Day and retained the subgeneric classification that had been in use. Apart from Pompilus cinereus View in CoL , which as a synonym of the type of the genus and would be included in Pompilus View in CoL s. str., none of the Australian species recorded in Pompilus View in CoL s. l. have been placed in subgenera. Consequently, I am ignoring the subgeneric arrangement until further examination of the genus determines its validity and the Australian species are placed.

Remarks: Pompilus cinereus ( Fabricius, 1775) is a widespread species with a number of synonyms and a rich literature on many aspects of its biology. The synonymy of Pompilus plumbeus ( Fabricius, 1787) and Pompilus pulcher ( Fabricius, 1798) with P. cinereus is here attributed to Evans (1972a), though Smith (1855) and Dalla Torre (1897) listed P. pul cher as a synonym of P. plumbeus in their catalogues and numerous other authors have also listed the synonymy prior to Evans. These previous synonymies appear to have been ignored and it is only after the publication of Evans (1972a) that the name Pompilus cinereus ( Fabricius, 1775) appears to dominate in the literature.

Deuteragenia lunulata Junco Y Reyes, 1951:165 View in CoL [comb. nov., cat.].
Distribution: NSW.
Remarks: Junco Y Reyes (1951) placed this species in Deuteragenia, Šustera, 1913 (now a subgenus of Dipogon Fox, 1897 ) along with other species placed in Pogonius, Dahlbom 1845 . However, he may have been unaware of Schulz’s (1911) earlier placement in Pompilus and Saussure’s description which states that the abdomen is sessile. As Dipogon has not previously been recorded from Australia and Junco Y Reyes made a number of other errors relating to Australian material I retain the species in Pompilus until its exact placement is determined.
