Poa aquatica Linnaeus , Species Plantarum 1: 67. 1753 View Cited Treatment .
"Habitat in Europa ad ripas piscinarum, fluviorum." RCN: 567.
Lectotype (Cope in Cafferty & al. in Taxon 49: 255. 2000): Herb. Linn. No. 87.1 ( LINN) .
Current name: Glyceria maxima (Hartm.) Holmb. ( Poaceae ).
Note: Although Kerguélen (in Lejeunia, n.s., 75: 185. 1975) stated "Type: ...LINN", this is not accepted as a formal typification, for the reasons explained by Cafferty & al. (in Taxon 49: 240. 2000). The epithet “aquatica” is pre-occupied in Glyceria by G. aquatica (L.) J. Presl & C. Presl (1819) , based on Aira aquatica L. (1753) . Glyceria aquatica (L.) Wahlenb. (1820) , based on Poa aquatica L. , is therefore a later homonym, and illegitimate.
