Type species. Phyllodoce foliosum M. Sars, 1835 , by subsequent designation ( Bergström 1914: 120).
Description. Prostomium rounded to pentagonal with small anterior ciliated elongation. Three antennae, paired ones in ated. Single pair of in ated ventral palps. Single pair of eyes super cially situated, with lenses. Nuchal organs large posteriorly directed dorso-lateral outgrowths from prostomium. Proboscis covered by small rounded papillae dorsally and ventrally, laterally with rows of rounded, discoidal or hook-shaped papillae. Four pairs of tentacular cirri (11 21 1). Ventral tentacular cirri of segment 2 asymmetrical, posteriorly directed, with chaetae arising from cirrophore. Segments 2 and 3 with dorsal and ventral aciculae. Parapodia biramous on median and posterior segments. Dorsal cirri reniform, wider than long, covering large part of dorsum. Prechaetal lobes of neuropodia symmetrical and rounded. Chaetae with rostrum of chaetal shaft covered by large number of teeth, decreasing in size proximally. Segmental band of cilia present. Pygidium with pair of rounded, attened pygidial cirri; single median pygidial papilla present.
Remarks. Levinsen (1883) erected Trachelophyllum for the new species Trachelophyllum luetkeni . According to his original description, the main diOEerence between T. luetkeni and Notophyllum was the number of tentacular cirri (two in Trachelophyllum , four in Notophyllum ). As indicated by many previous authors (e.g. McIntosh, 1908; Bergström, 1914), Trachelophyllum is a junior synonym of Notophyllum , and Levinsen’s description was based on damaged specimens of N. foliosum (ZMUC-1014), which had lost two pairs of tentacular cirri and all dorsal cirri.
Czerniavsky (1882) erected three genera, Eunotophyllum , Pseudonotophyllum and Paraeulalia for N. alatum and N. frontale , N. polynoides and Phyllodoce (Eulalia) multicirris , respectively. We agree with the majority of earlier authors who consider these names as junior synonyms of Notophyllum .
Hesperophyllum was erected by Chamberlin (1919) for his new species Hesperophyllum tectum . According to the original description, it diOEered from Notophyllum in having attened foliaceous and asymmetrical ventral tentacular cirri. The type and the only known specimen of the species includes only a single mounted parapodium, and the attened nature of the ventral tentacular cirri cannot be re-assessed. As Hesperophyllum tectum in other characters agrees well with Notophyllum we treat the name as a junior synonym.
Imajima and Hartman (1964) erected Nipponophyllum for phyllodocids with two pairs of tentacular cirri on both of the rst two segments (21 2). Pleijel (1991) reexamined the type material of the type species Notophyllum japonicum , and instead interpreted the distribution of the tentacular cirri as in e.g. Notophyllum (11 21 1). Based on this and other characters, Nipponophyllum was synonymized with Notophyllum .
