USA: holotype (USNM-553 1), Alaska, Uyak Bay, 80–74 fms; one specimen (USNM-22074), Canoe Bay , 17 September 1940 ; one specimen (USNM-2684 3), Puget Sound, WA, 25 m, 2 August 1938; one specimen ( MCZ 19663), Peavine Pass, San Juan Islands, WA, 48ss35.30¾N, 122ss48.30¾W, 12 August 1960 . Canada: 14 specimens (USNM-3508 7), oOE Breakwater Island , entrance to Gabriola Pass, 16 July 1924 .

Description. For length and width measurements versus number of segments, see gure 11; holotype complete but has been dried, 23 mm long and 3.3 mm wide for 76 segments (30 mm long and 6.5 mm wide for ca 78 segments according to Moore, 1906). Up to 100 mm long and 4.8 mm wide for 162 segments (USNM-35087). Body broad, of uniform width, dorso-ventrally attened; dorsum largely covered by dorsal cirri. Prostomium rounded to triangular, with antero-ventral elongation and a pair of large, rounded eyes with lenses. Length of paired antennae and palps ca two-thirds length of prostomium. Median antenna about as long as prostomium, inserted between eyes. Nuchal organs with single to four lobes. Number of lobes in juveniles (<5 mm long) unknown. Proboscis long, as wide as prostomium or wider, distal part (ca four- fths of total length) with three or four merged rows of rounded papillae on each side; proximal part (ca one- fth of total length) with single to two or three merged rows of posteriorly directed hook-shaped papillae on each side; papillary rows absent from proximal-most part (gure 10A, B). Proximal-most part of proboscis with dorso-lateral groups of two large and two or three small rounded papillae on each side. Proximal and median part of proboscis (ca three-quarters of total length) dorsally and ventrally covered with minute rounded papillae of 7–11 m m in diameter. Distal part dorsally and ventrally with large, oval papillae, 40–70 m m in maximum diameter. Terminal ring smooth, without papillae. Segment 1 dorsally invisible. Segment 2 dorsally narrow, less prominent than segment 3, occasionally covered by prostomium in larger specimens. Segment 1 in juvenile specimens unknown. Tentacular cirri of segment 1 reaching ca segment 6. Dorsal tentacular cirri of segments 2 and 3 reaching ca segment 11. Ventral tentacular cirri of segment 2 reaching ca segment 7, asymmetrical, posteriorly directed, wider than other tentacular cirri, occasionally with small distinct tips in larger specimens. Segment 2 with ca 10 compound chaetae arising from ventral tentacular cirrophores. Segment 3 with small neuropodial lobes with ca 12 compound chaetae and small ventral cirri. Dorsal and ventral aciculae in segment 2 and 3 unknown. Dorsal cirri of median segments broadly reniform (gure 10C–G). Tips of dorsal cirri absent in large specimens; unknown in juvenile specimens. Dorsal cirrophores dorsally elongated, from segment 12 with one or two notopodial capillary chaetae. Neuropodial lobes with 40–45 compound chaetae. Ventral cirri reniform. Pygidial cirri unknown. Pygidial papilla present.

Colour. Live animals not observed, body reported as dull greenish olive with dusky streaks and spots and purplish brown eyes ( Moore, 1906). Preserved specimens brown, dorsum in large specimens iridescent. Eyes blackish.

Habitat. From depths of 25–45 m.

Distribution. Gulf of Alaska, Vancouver, Washington, Oregon, California.

Remarks. Notophyllum imbricatum diOEers from other Notophyllum in having rows of hook-shaped papillae on the proximal part of the proboscis. It is also characterized by the combination of dorsally elongated dorsal cirrophores with a few capillary chaetae, and in ated ventral tentacular cirri on segment 2 in larger specimens.

There are inconsistencies relating to the type and the type locality of N. imbricatum in Moore’s studies (1906, 1908). He (1906: 217–218) described this species based on a designated type from Albatross Station 4269, Afoqnak Bay (misspelling of Afognak Bay ), Alaska, plus a smaller non-type specimen from the same locality. However , Moore subsequently (1908) changed opinion regarding the locality, and stated that the type was from station 4289, Uyak Bay , Alaska. This is in agreement with the labels of the holotype (USNM-5531), which states that the specimen was collected from station 4289, Uyak Bay , Alaska. The locality of the smaller specimens in the second publication remained Afognak Bay but was here labelled as ‘cotype’. Whereas cotypes have no nomenclatural status, uncertainty remains regarding the correct provenance of the holotype. The matter may not be of any practical importance since the two localities are close to each other .

Re-examination of Banse’s (1972) specimen of Notophyllum (Hesperophyllum) tectum from Washington, USA shows it to agree with N. imbricatum , also in the presence of the unique hook-shaped papillae.

The northwest Paci c coast records by Uschakov (1972) of this species are here referred to? N. imajimai sp. n., due to the absence of hook-shaped papillae, although re-examination of his specimens would be necessary for a more certain allocation.

Knox (1960) recorded N. imbricatum from New Zealand; although his description clearly relates to a Notophyllum , it is not detailed enough to establish speci c identity.
