Neoperla lineata Navás, 1924 View in CoL

Description. Body length: 6–10 mm. Head ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 13 − 14 ): brown forward of ocelli with well defined m- line and pale anterior frontoclypeus. Pronotum: rectangular, widest anteriorly; brown laterally with pale rugosities extending to near lateral margin, indistinct medial pale stripe present. Margins completely fringed with short thick bristles, somewhat variable in length. Meso- and Metanotum: pale midline; wing pads dark or pale when well developed, but often with teardrop-shaped pale areas. Dorsal surfaces covered with fine short setae, and scattered thick bristles; well-defined anterior and lateral lines of thick bristles. Margins completely fringed with thick bristles, somewhat variable in length. Foreleg ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 13 − 14 ): dorsal surfaces covered with fine short setae, except for hairless median bar and basal posterior triangle-shaped area on femur. Femur dorsally with well-defined transverse row of ≥10 long, thick spines; scattered short and medium-sized spines on dorsal surface; basal posterior patch of very small spines along margin, reaching transverse row of long spines.

Distribution. Belize, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, México.

Local distribution ( Fig. 15 View FIGURE 15 ): Lowland and middle elevation streams on both Pacific and Caribbean slopes, and highlands up to 1800 m asl.

Habitat and substratum. Submerged leaf litter packs in strong current; medium sized streams and small rivers, mainly in forested areas; but this species was also found in one medium sized, slow flowing low elevation stream.

Diagnosis. Anacroneuria lineata is very similar to A. holzenthali and A. benedettoi in the amount and arrangements of spines on the foreleg, but differs clearly from these two species in the color pattern on the head and thorax ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 13 − 14 ). Anacroneuria varilla is somewhat similar in this color pattern, but with fewer spines on the foreleg ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 13 − 14 ), similar to A. divisa .
