Phaenomys ferrugineus (Thomas 1894) View in CoL
[Oryzomys] ferrugineus Thomas 1894 , Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist., ser. 6, 14: 352.
Type Locality: Brazil, Rio de Janeiro State, Rio de Janeiro.
Vernacular Names: Rusty Phaenomys.
Distribution: Known only from a restricted area in the Serra do Mar, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo states, S Brazil.
Conservation: IUCN – Endangered.
Discussion: Known museum records (total = 11) consolidated by Maia Vaz (2000), who noted that the species has not been collected within the last sixty years and commented on its conservation status. An individual collected in 1998, from Rio de Janeiro, brings the total to 12 and indicates that the species can persist even in slightly degraded habitat (Bonvicino et al., 2001).
