Maxiana sericea ( Draudt, 1950) , comb. nov.
( Figs 7, 8, 10, 12 View FIGURES 7 – 12 , 17–20 View FIGURES 13 – 18 View FIGURES 19 – 22 )
Lectotype (hereby designated in order to stabilize nomenclature): male ( Figs 7, 8 View FIGURES 7 – 12 ), [ China], “Mokanshan, Prov. Chekiang, 18. 10. 30. Höne”; “ LECTOTYPE male, Bombyciella sericea Draudt, 1950 , designated by Saldaitis, Benedek, Behounek & Stüning, 2014” [red, printed label]; genitalia prep. No. 2270-DS; in coll. ZFMK; paralectotypes: 1male, ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 7 – 12 ) same data and collector as lectotype, genitalia prep. No. 2272-DS; 4 males ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 7 – 12 ), same data and collector as lectotype; coll. ZFMK.
Notes. In the description, Draudt (1950: 64) mentions specimens of B. sericea (i.e. syntypes) from Mokanshan (18.x.30, without mentioning the numbers of specimens), from West-tien-mu-shan [Zhejiang] (27.–28.ix.32, “several specimens, but worn”—translated from German), and from Hoengshan [Hunan prov.] (14.x.33, without numbers), but without designating a holotype. Of these syntypes, the Höne collection at ZFMK contains only 6 males from Mokanshan (with the correct data, 18.x.30). One of them ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 7 – 12 ) is designated as lectotype (see above). As observed earlier in other species described by Draudt, a part of syntypes could not be found. Near the end of the World War II Draudt’s home at Darmstadt, Germany was bombed and his complete private collection, and thousands of specimens he had on loan from the ZFMK and other museums, were destroyed. Only a small part of the loan-material had been returned, so Draudt very often designated other specimens which he discovered in the Höne collection after the war and which in fact did not belong to the original syntype-series subsequently as “ types ”. In the case of B. sericea , the ZFMK series contains an “allotype” with labels handwritten by Draudt, collected at West-tien-mu-shan, but on 6.ix.32, a date not mentioned in the description. Therefore this specimen, which is a male moreover, cannot be considered as a syntype.
Additional material: 16 males, Mokanshan, Prov. Chekiang, Höne, 13.10. (2), 14.10. (1), 15.10. (2), 16.10. (3), 17.10. (2), 19.10. (3), 20.10. (1), 24.10. (1), 25.10.30 (1); 1 male, West-tien-mu-shan, Prov. Chekiang, 6.9.1932, H. Höne (labelled as “Allotype female”), 1 male, same locality and collector, 7.9.1932; 20 males, Hoengshan, Prov. Hunan, Höne, 11.7. (1), 7.10. (1), 8.10. (2, one dissected: genitalia prep. No. 2271-DS), 9.10. (4), 10.10. (3), 12.10. (1), 13.10. (1), 17.10. (1), 19.10. (2), 20.10 (1), 27.10. 1933 (1). 2 males same locality and collector, but with the year 1933 mentioned only; coll. ZFMK.
1 male, China, Prov. Fujian, Dai Mao Shan, 60 km NW Longyan, 1300 m, 25°32'N, 116°51'E, Siniaev V. leg., 4.–21.xi.2004, genitalia prep. No. GB 8274m, coll. GBG / ZSM.
Description. See generic description.
Bionomics and distribution. The syntype series and the main additional material has been collected in China’s Zhejiang and Hunan provinces and only one specimen which was collected at 1600m in West-tien-mu-shan has an altitude recorded. Most were collected in October but there is one specimen from Hoengshan (Hunan) collected in July, which may indicate an earlier generation. The recently collected specimens were collected in Fujian Province in November at 1300m and in Hunan, Shaanxi provinces (pers. com. P. Gyulai).
