Type Locality: Brazil, Minas Gerais State, Pleistocene cave deposits near Lagoa Santa.
Vernacular Names: Lagoa Santa Akodont.
Distribution: Minas Gerais, Brazil.
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: Described as a species of Scapteromys , referred to Akodon by Hershkovitz (1966 c), and confirmed as a species of Bibimys by Massoia (1980 a). Although described as a fossil ( Winge, 1887) from the Lagoa Santa caves, the species survives in the region of Minas Gerais (D’Elía et al., in press; Paglia et al., 1995). Diploid number (2n = 70) same as B. torresi but fundamental numbers differ ( FN = 76 versus 80; Gonçalves et al., in press).
