Stephanopoides cognata View in CoL O. P.- Cambridge, 1892: 104 (Holotype female from Boucard, Veraguas, Panama, deposited in BMNH 1901.3.3.522, examined).

Parastephanops cognatus (O. P.- Cambridge, 1892). F. O. P.- Cambridge 1900: 163.

Diagnosis. Stephanopoides cognata differs from all species of Stephanopoides by having a mostly yellow abdomen, and tarsus I and II being darker than in other species of the genus. The epigynum shows a median ridge similar to Stephanopoides simoni (see Bonaldo & Lise 2001: 79, figs 28–31) but differs by a broader median ridge at the posterior region; also the copulatory ducts of S. cognata are longer than in other Stephanopoides species ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1 – 5 ).

Material examined. Only the type (see above).

Description. Female (Holotype): Total length 6.66. Prosoma 3.15 long, 3.06 wide. Clypeus height 0.34. Chelicera: 1.32 long, 0.99 wide. Endites: 1.06 long, 0.49 wide. Labium 0.61 long, 0.65 wide. Sternum: 1.35 long, 1.10 wide. Prosoma dark reddish brown with dorsum lighter than margins; rounded with cephalic region high. Clypeus almost as wide as prosoma, vertical and having seven setae, one median and three marginal pairs. Chelicerae, endites, labium and sternum reddish brown. Anterior margin of the chelicerae with three teeth, the middle one biggest; posterior margin with two teeth ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 5 ). Eye diameters and interdistances: AME 0.11, ALE 0.18, PME 0.13, PLE 0.17, AME-ALE 0.29, AME-AME 0.29, ALE-ALE 1.04, PME-PLE 0.25, PME-PME 0.58, PLE-PLE 1.43. Anterior and posterior eye rows slightly recurved. Leg spination: femur I, d1-1 p1-1-1-1 r1-1-1-1; femur II, d1-1 p1-1-1 r1-1-1; tibia I, II, p1-1-1 v2-2 -2-2 r1-1-1; metatarsus I–II p1-1-1 v2-2 -3 r1-1-1; femur III–IV d2-1; patella III–IV p1 r1/ tibia III–IV d1-1 p0-1 v1-1 -2 r1-1-1; metatarsus III–IV p1-1- 1 v 0-2-3 r1-1-1. Legs formula: 2143. Measurements: I, femur 3.19, patella 1.25, tibia 2.67, metatarsus 1.78, tarsus 1.13, total 10.02; II, 3.16, 1.22, 2.78, 1.77, 1.13, 10.06; III, 1.82, 0.68, 1.23, 0.91, 0.59, 5.23; IV, 2.20, 0.72, 1.39, 1.33, 0.77, 6.41. Femur, patella and base of tibia I and II dark yellow; apex of tibia, metatarsus and tarsus I and II brown. Base of femur III and IV dark yellow; apex of femur, patella, tibia metatarsus and tarsus III and IV brown. Abdomen 4.23 long, 3.06 wide. Abdomen yellow with a triangular dark spot on dorsum ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 5 ). Epigynum with lateral region elevated and fused with median ridge posteriorly. Median ridge triangular, being narrow at the anterior region and broad at the posterior region, with copulatory openings originating on laterals ( Figs 3–4 View FIGURES 1 – 5 ). Copulatory ducts long, arranged in a circle close to its origin and curved (meander-like) towards the spermathecae. Spermathecae elongated but with compact arrangement ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1 – 5 ).
