GENUS DESMODORELLA COBB, 1933

Diagnosis (modified from Verschelde, Gourbault & Vincx, 1998)

Annulated cuticle with longitudinal rows of ridges or spines. Lateral alae absent. Head capsule truncated or rounded. Large multispiral to loop-shaped amphideal fovea located on head capsule. Cephalic setae anteri- or to or at level of the anterior edge of amphideal fovea. Pharynx with rounded or oval posterior bulb.

For more detailed characters and a revision of the genus see Verschelde et al. (1998). Desmodora aquaedulcis Gagarin & Nguyen Vu Thanh, 2003 , which was described from the Cau River in Vietnam, was listed as Desmodorella aquaedulcis by Decraemer & Smol (2006). Although no reason was explicitly given for this transfer by these authors, their key to freshwater species of the Desmodoroidea includes Desmodorella aquaedulcis , which is described as having a cuticle ‘with longitudinal rows of brush-like ornamentations’ ( Decraemer & Smol, 2006: 548). In the original description of the species, the cuticle of Desmodora aquaedulcis is described as having 12 longitudinal rows of spines beginning just anteriorly to the head capsule and ending just anterior to the cloaca/anus. The transfer of this species to the genus Desmodorella is therefore justified.
