Harpalus lewisii LeConte, 1865b: 103. Type locality: "Marquette [Marquette County, Michigan], Lake Superior" (original citation for the lectotype). Lectotype (♂), designated by Noonan (1991: 62), in MCZ [# 5899]. Etymology. The specific name was proposed for Samuel Lewis, a physician from Philadelphia who had an interest in North American Coleoptera . Lewis provided LeConte and other coleopterists with fine specimens from many parts of the continent.

Harpalus aesopus Casey, 1914: 117. Type locality: "Plattsburg [Clinton County], New York" (original citation). Lectotype (♀), designated by Lindroth (1975: 138), in USNM [# 47780]. Synonymy established by Casey (1924: 101), confirmed by Lindroth (1968: 773).

Distribution.

This species ranges from Nova Scotia to central Alberta and southeastern Northwest Territories, south to southern Wisconsin and Connecticut [see Noonan 1991: Fig. 270]. All known sites in the United States are east of the Mississippi.
