TYPE LOCALITY: Colombia, Dept. Magdalena, Minca near Santa Marta .

DISTRIBUTION: N Colombia below 500 m in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

COMMENTS: Subgenus Proechimys . Recognized in Corbet and Hill (1991:205), Nowak (1991:943) and Emmons and Feer (1990:274), but not in Eisenberg (1989).
