scientific name

Luffa cylindrica (L.) M. Roem.
status

Momordica cylindrica Linnaeus View in CoL , Species Plantarum 2: 1009. 1753.

"Habitat in Zeylona, China." RCN: 7318.

Lectotype (Wunderlin in Ann. Missouri Bot. Gard. 65: 329. 1978): Herb. Linn. No. 1150.9 ( LINN) .

Current name: Luffa cylindrica (L.) M. Roem. View in CoL ( Cucurbitaceae ).

Note: Jeffrey (in Kew Bull. 15: 355. 1962) stated that the type was apparently a cultivated plant but that no specimen had been traced. Keraudren-Aymonin (in Adansonia, sér. 2, 8: 399. 1968) indicated a LINN sheet, annotated as " M. luffa " (so presumably 1150.6), as the holotype but this is original material for M. luffa L. rather than M. cylindrica . Wunderlin (in Ann. Missouri Bot. Gard. 65: 329. 1978) indicated 1150.9 (LINN), which he had seen only via a fiche image, as the type. This appears to be original material for the name but seems to be identifiable as Cucumis melo L. Jeffrey (in Kew Bull. 34: 791. 1980) subsequently indicated a Hermann description as the lectotype but this is contrary to Art. 8.1. Depending on the identity of 1150.9 (LINN), and whether it conflicts with the protologue, there may be a need to propose M. cylindrica for conservation with a conserved type if it is to continue to be used in its current sense.
